Take a Visit to Portland Art Museum - The Oldest Art Museum in the Pacific Northwest
The Portland Art Museum as the name suggests is in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1892, by 7 leaders who belonged to Portland's business and cultural institutions the museum is the oldest of its kind in the whole of Pacific Northwest. The aim of forming the Portland Art Association was to set up an art museum for all. After its renovations the museum has become 1 of the 25 largest art museums in the entire country spanning an area of 240000 square feet.
Around 42000 art works are among its permanent collection. The art museum has various sections dedicated to various types of art like the Native American art, Modern art, Asian art, Northwest art and various others. Henry Corbett a local citizen of prominence had donated $10000 which was used to buy the very first collection of the museum which were basically Roman and Greek sculptures.
The museum then moved to its very own building in 1905 and had an exhibition featuring watercolors. The final location of the museum was opened on 18 November, 1932, six years later another wing was added which opened on 15 September, 1939, doubling the gallery space. The year 2001 saw the single largest acquisition by the museum and 2007 was another feather in the cap for the Portland Art Museum which now showcases 'The Ox-Cart' an 1884 painting by Vincent Van Gogh making it the first work of Van Gogh to be displayed in any of the Northwest Museums surely a landmark in the history of the Portland Art Museum.
