How did Powell's City of Books rise into one amazing journalism adventure? The store humble beginnings started on 1971 on a dilapidated corner of northwest Portland, Oregon. Powell's roots started in Chicago, wherein Michael Powell who was then a University of Chicago graduate student, opened his very first bookstore in 1970.
Influenced by his friends and professors, as well as novelist Saul Bellow, Michael lent $3,000 to take on a lease on a bookstore. The business enterprise proved to be a great success that he was able to repay his borrowed capital within two months. With is bookstore he has created a unique recipe for bookworms all over America.
Powell's Books distinguishing synergy today supports four full-service bookstores namely Powell's on Hawthorne, Powell's City of Books, Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing, and Powell's at PDX. It also has two specialty stores, which are Powell's Books for Home and Garden and Powell's Technical Books.
