- About the Regular Hours

When it comes to the hours, the Garden opens to the general public seven days a week throughout the year, except on Thanksgivings Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Specifically, the operating hours are different for winter season and summer season. During winter season from October 1 to March 31, Portland Japanese Garden welcomes visitors from noon to 4 pm on Monday, and 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Sunday. In summer season starting from April 1 through September 30, the Garden operates from noon to 7 pm on Monday, and 10 am to 7 pm Tuesday through Sunday.

- Grab the Guided Public Tours of the Garden

To help the visitors explore the Garden to the most, guided tours throughout the venue are offered without additional charges with paid general admission. By this walking outdoor tour, the prettiest and the most valuable views of five featured subgardens are introduced with vivid descriptions. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes to one hour, and visitors can join or leave the group at any time. No reservation is necessary.

The guided tours are available at 10:45 am, 1 pm, and 2:30 pm everyday April through October, and provided at 1 pm only on weekends November through March. Please note that the tour is not available at 10:45 am on Mondays, except on designated holidays.

1) Art in the Garden Summer 2011 (May 27 - June 19): This year's theme is Urban Green: Small Trees for Small Spaces. When it comes to June, the highlight of this event is a lecture/demonstration given by David De Groot about the Art of Saikei on June 16 at 7:30 pm to 9 pm. Get your mind inspired and learn more about the art of saikei through lectures, images and demonstration.

2) Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition (June 11 - 12): Ikebana, the traditional and unique art of flower arrangement originated in Japan, deserves a good study and a better understanding. Now Portland Japanese Garden offers the previous opportunity for you! On June 11 and 12 at 10 am to 6 pm, the 39th Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition will be presented at the Pavilion, as a part of the Portland Rose Festival. Come and approach the art and intense creativity of Sogetsu School of Ikebana. The admission is included with the general admission into the Garden, so no extra fees!

3) Photographer Member Hours (June 15): The Photo-Member Hours happen each month through the eight months when the weather, light and scenery are the most photogenic. These events are exclusive for Garden Photographer Members and held at 7 pm to 9 pm on June 15. More occurrences happen on:

July 19: 7 pm to 9 pm.

August 14: 7 pm to 9 pm.

Sept 21: 6:30 am 8 am

October 6: 6:30 am to 8 am

4) Chado, the Way of Tea (June 18): The presentation of the art of Chado, performed by Kashintei Kai, is offered in the Tea Garden on each third Saturday of summer months at 1 pm and 2 pm.

5) Garden Lecture Series: Healing Nature (June 30): As a part of 2011 Japanese Garden Lecture Series, Healing Nature, given by Vince Healy, will tell you what is the meaning of healing and restorative gardens, and in which ways the gardens and their settings can benefit healing. Interesting, right? Get your every curiosity about gardens' restorative quality solved by joining this lecture. It will be given at 5:30 to 7:30 pm on June 30, and the admission rates are $10 for Garden members and $15 for non-members. The reservation starts from May 31. For the seats are limited, secure your space right now!
