Portland History

Portland stands at the meeting place of two rivers Willamette and Columbia. This enables it to allow large ships to sail through, as they do on seas. In 1845, a sea group found interest in the confluence and thought that it could station its port there only. But lots of wood needed to be cleared making the task onerous. They left the task and sold the premises to a certain Mr. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. The name Portland came from there. The city became a prominent port and rose in population from 821 in 1850 to about half a million in 1950.
