If you are visiting Portland and you love art, then you have to visit the pearl district in Portland. This is a very intriguing place with a lot of history and culture behind it. The district does not look anything like the other glamorous districts in the other areas of Portland but it has another charm to it.

This district used to have a very drab and rough to look at it and parts of it still do. But you have to remember that you should not always judge something by its looks. As the name suggests, there are pearls sitting within these rough exterior settings.

It a very large art district and has several distinguishing features, buildings and icons that set it apart from the rest of the Portland. This is the place where the intellectual crowd hangs out. It was formerly a warehouse district and part of an industrial hub.

2. Places of interest

The pearl district is filled with places that will attract a lot of people and especially art connoisseurs. What once used to be just warehouses and docks and loading ports, is now an amazing patchwork of fancy condos, art galleries, cafes and stores.

Amongst the more famous places is Powel's world of books - a large new and used bookstore that occupies an entire city block.

This place also contains the historic North Park Blocks. It also houses the Portland Oregon Art Museum.

The Jamison square is quite popular, especially because kids love the fountain that simulates a tidal pool.
