Oregon Zoo
Any travel guide Portland (Oregon) will have at least a detailed section, if not an entire chapter, on the Oregon Zoo. The Oregon Zoo is a star attraction that receives a lot of visitors every year. It is a home to rare birds and animals that can be observed in their natural habitats.
There are carefully created living areas where amazing creatures live and display their natural behavior. The visitor is taken to within inches of creatures such as a green anaconda, various apes, primates, birds and other reptiles. The visitors are treated to a rare view into the untamed wild through glass viewing windows.
You can start with the ever-popular Red Ape Reserve where you will have the rare opportunity to observe white-cheeked gibbons and orangutans in their natural habitats as they actually swing over the heads of the visitors and go about their daily activities.
Then you can soak up the diversity of the African rainforest that is faithfully recreated within the Oregon Zoo. You will get to a wide range birds, bats and water fouls that thrive in the fertile regions of the African rainforest. It is complete with tropical thunder, lightning and downpour, keeping the conditions perfectly suited for the living of the endangered slender-snouted crocodiles, the lung fish and frogs that live in the swamp area of the exhibit.
Afterwards you can head over to the African Savanna and see the giraffes, hippos and zebras as they gather around the watering hole for drink amidst the dry, open plains of east Africa. Later, you can enjoy the exotic birds flying around in the Howard Vollum Aviary. You will love the calm and beautiful ambience of the aviary coupled with the chirping of the birds.
As any good Portland travel guide will tell you, unwinding at the AfriCafe is a must after an exciting day at the Oregon Zoo.
