OMSI Events Information

Referred to as OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is a museum situated just south of downtown Portland. The museum houses two auditoriums, a planetarium, an IMAX Dome theater, a submarine exhibit and five different exhibit halls with a variety of hands-on permanent exhibits centered on natural sciences, industry and technology. Temporary exhibits span over a huge range of disciplines.

However, the museum is more than home to so many exhibits. It also hosts numerous events and shows throughout the year. For instance, the IMAX Theater and a large auditorium of the museum is the places where annual events like science fairs occur. Additionally, OMSI also hosts many events in various parts of Portland. Now, there is a variety of ongoing and upcoming OMSI events for families, teens and adults. If you don't want to miss out these wonderful events, plan your visit as soon as possible.

1) OMSI Science Pub

Want to learn about science in a relaxing way? OMSI Science Pub serves your needs. The OMSI Science Pub is actually an informal science lecture complete with beer, wine or non-alcoholic beverage. It is held monthly in fours locations in Oregon, including the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne Boulevard) and the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) in Portland, the Cozmic Pizza in Eugene and the Old World Deli in Corvallis.

OMSI Science Pub is open for people aged 21 and older or minor with adults. The lecture runs from 7pm to 9pm. Most science pubs fill quickly. If you are interested, come early to get a seat. The upcoming science pubs in Portland are:

2) OMSI After Dark: Science of the Senses

Treat yourself to beautiful galaxies and science fun at OMSI after Dark. You will have a wonderful night at the museum filled with food, drink and brain-building science fun. At the event, you will enjoy live demos, new featured exhibitions and old favorites while tasting delicious snacks and sweets together with beer and wine.

This event is only for people aged 21 and up, with a fee of $10. OMSI members are free of charge. The upcoming OMSI After Dark events will start at 6pm through 10pm on April 27, May 25 and June 29. For more info and details, click here:

3) OMSI Star Parties

Are your kids interested in galaxies? Bring them to attend a free OMSI Star Party at Rooster Rock State Park or L.L. Stub Stewart State Park. This is a great chance to get a closer look at stars and other celestial objects through telescopes. The upcoming OMSI Star Parties in 2011 start at 7:30pm on the following days:

- April 9 - Saturn Splendor

- May 7 - National Astronomy Day

- June 18 - Summer Solstice Celebration

- July 9 - Lunar Viewing

- August 12 - Perseid Meteor Shower Watch

- September 17 - Autumnal Equinox Celebration

4) Annual Shell Show

The 46th Annual Shell Show is coming soon. Interested visitors can seize the chance to discover the beauty of the ocean. At that time, a wide variety of race and beautiful shells, containing conch, mollusk, oyster and clam from around the world will be displayed on the show.

The hours of the show are from 9:30am to 5:30pm from April 26 to 30. Event is included with museum admission. The general admission for the museum is $12 for adults, $9 for children aged 3 - 13 and $9 for seniors aged 63 and up. For detailed info about museum admission, check this page:

5) Reptile and Amphibian Show

In addition to shell show, there is another show that you may be interested in. That is Reptile and Amphibian Show, which features one of the largest gatherings of reptiles and amphibians in the Pacific Northwest. You will see more than 100 exotic animals displayed at this popular event, including a wide variety of captive-bred snakes, lizards, turtles, alligators and much more. The show also has a special hands-on area where guests will have an opportunity to interact with nontoxic retiles and amphibians.
