These Book Stores are located in Portland Metropolitan Area. The founder of Powells Books is Walter Powell. With seven branches through out the country it has emerged as the largest bookstores in the world. The branch of this book stores in Chicago area still exist but the ownership has been changed. Powells City of books is situated in the Pearl District. From 2005 onwards they started to provide DVDs also. At its retail stores, new and used books are kept side by side. Powell's Books is a chain of seven book stores located within Portland Oregon. The main bookstore, called Powell's world of books, occupies an entire city block and sprawls over about 1.6 acres or 68,000 square feet of retail space. At this size, it is no wonder that the store claims to be the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world.

This book store specializes in selling both new and used books and stores them side by side in the store. The online catalogue of the store shows over four million new and used books that are available for sale. The store buys over 3000 used books every day. Recently it has also started offering DVD titles through its stores with free shipping. There are currently 44,000 titles available in the inventory.

There are also rare and out of print books available for sale here. The internet wing of the book store is a separate present but is connected with the stores nonetheless.

The bookstore was started in 1971 by Walter Powell. He was then joined by his son Michael Powell and soon they expanded the business in Portland.

In 2002, the bookstore was named by the USA Today as one of t he 10 best bookstores in the country.
