Have a Look at Sellwood Bridge: The Southernmost of Portland's Bridges
Sellwood Bridge is located in the southern part of the city in the area surrounded by Sellwood Park, Burlingame, Powers Marine Park and a few other landmarks. The bridge is also the last one in Portland area that you will come across while traveling southwards out of the city. It takes about 30 minutes by public transport, and afternoon is the perfect time to visit the place, in order to avoid the morning traffic rush.
It is an easy route to get to the bridge from the main city area - thanks to the Highway 43 along the banks of the river in Portland. Sellwood Bridge is Portland's first fixed span bridge in Oregon, and is the only means of crossing the river for more than 5 miles on each side. As a result, it is also one of the busiest bridges in the state of Oregon.
The bridge has been standing since 1925, and visiting it can be a great plan if you intend to document the history of Portland. The city came up in a big way only after the 1920s and the building of this bridge is one of the biggest events in the making of Portland and its surrounding infrastructure. Led by Gustav Lindenthal, the bridge building project was complete for a cost of more than half a million dollars.
Recent events related to the bridge include the Sellwood area's marches demanding improvements and renovations of the bridge by making it wider. Since it is a very busy bridge, maintaining it and allowing pedestrian commuting are the major concerns that will be addressed by government officials in the near future.
