A Slice History of Portland International Raceway: The Former Site of Vanport
Vanport City initially stood as the ground for hosing projects for Second World War ship builders. The housing project however came to a tragic end owing to floods in 1948. Today the place hosts one of the most famous international racing tracks since 1960. The international racing track is one of the biggest prides of Portland's citizens, as it is a success story that helped the city climb out of an embarrassing past fraught with ignorance for the shipbuilders.
The Vanport City area and the international racing track are located in the city's northern Kenton neighborhood in close proximity with Vancouver of Canada. The area is known for Portland's popular Rose Festival, which is associated with the racing events taking place at International Raceway. The racing circuit is a popular destination for lovers of the NASCAR races, the Rose Cup and amateur racing competitions.
Drag races, go-kart races and much more are only part of the entertainment that awaits every visitor at the Portland International Raceway. Summer is a great time to visit the venue as the biggest event unfolds with the NASCAR K&N series race called BI-Mart Salute the Troops 125. After improvements and renovations recently implemented in 2007-08, the venue is all set for various kinds of exploit.
The historic area offers accommodation from affordable hotels and motels like Days Inn, Motel 6 and others. These hotels are not only located near the international raceway, but also in close proximity with Heron Lakes Golf Course, which is a perfect family outing zone with lush outfields and a large horizon limit.
